Is there a User Group in Sydney ?
None that I am currently aware of. I would get on to the Legacy Aus mailing list, and put the call out, to see if anyone else is interested. Send an email to: Aus-Legacy-L-request@Rootsweb.com to subscribe.
Many thanks, Alona
My first ever trip to Australia was in December 1990. I landed at Darwin airport and got pulled to one side. The officer asked me the purpose of my visit (among other questions), and I explained that I planned to surprise my sister for Christmas who now lives in Brisbane. I was then off to see relatives who lived along the Sunshine coast, and then down to Sydney, Melbourne, and Canberra, where I had family members in each place.
He said, “you have a lot of family ties in Australia, don’t you mate!”, to which I replied something along the lines about how my clan came over with the first settlers. He then went on to ask me if I had any criminal convictions. I jokingly said, “I wasn’t aware a criminal record was an entry requirement these days?” Needless to say, I got a complete bag search and held back by some 90 minutes.
All that aside, I think there’s some rich history and must be some amazing ancestry for those folks who take the time to trace back their roots.
