Adelaide’s Destitute Asylum Stories Wanted
The Destitute Asylum began in the 1850s and was a ‘place of last resort for many underprivileged, single, pregnant women, as well as the poor, and orphaned children.’  During its 66 year history, almost 1700 babies were born on the site. Only a small portion of the original two-storey lying-in home still exists, and stands on the Migration Museum grounds, just off Kintore Avenue, in Adelaide.

Now the South Australia’s Migration Museum is setting up a permanent exhibition for the Destitute Asylum, and they are looking for people (or relatives of those) who have a connection to the Destitute Asylum and the personal stories associated with them for their exhibition. If you want more information, or can help out please contact to Migration Museum on (08) 8207 7580 or email: migration@history.sa.gov.au.
