The Society of Australian Genealogists is one of Australia’s leading genealogy societies. Based in Sydney, they are a very active group, which also includes offering a comprehensive events program to members and other attendees, which due to COVID-19 has been transferred to online, so anyone, anywhere can ‘attend’, and they have certainly been catering for everyone, based on the wide variety of topics they offer.

Today I received the following information ifrom them, and am helping spread the word about this wonderful event they are proposing to hold …

“In response to requests in our Education Survey last year SAG is proposing to hold an event for those interested in researching First Nations of Australia ancestry on 28 August 2021.

As this is a specialised area of research we would like to invite any SAG members or friends who have connections to a First Nations community, work professionally in this area or have researched their own First Nations ancestor to express an interest in providing a presentation for the event.

Presentations can take the form of a short talk or an interview, either of these could be presented live or pre-recorded. We are happy to consider talks anywhere between 15 min to 1 hour in duration.

We are particularly interested in hearing about the research techniques and resources people have used to uncover the story of First Nations ancestors, stumbling blocks you have hit and suggestions to overcome them.

We would also value a presentation that can provide guidance on cultural sensitivities that researchers should understand when conducting research within First Nations communities and records.

If you would like to be involved in this event, please send a brief outline of your area of experience and a topic you are able to present to SAG’s Education Manager via education@sag.org.au by 5pm, Sunday, 8 August 2021.

I look forward to seeing your proposals.
Vanessa Cassin, SAG Education Manager

So if you are interested in submitting a presentation, or know someone that would be – please get in touch with the Society of Australian Genealogists. This is a fantastic topic, and I’m so pleased that the Society are looking at holding this event.
