logo - SAGHS GenealogySABig news from the South Australian Genealogy and Heraldry Society, (the state society in South Australia). They have just done a MAJOR (and much needed) update on their website (www.genealogysa.org.au).

The Society saw the need to provide useful content to members, and not just those locally who can visit their premises at Unley. But it takes time and money to do this. But things are progressing, and this upgrade is a big step towards doing exactly that, as the society has totally upgraded the Member Section of the website … and it’s GOOD! Really, GOOD!

If you don’t believe me, check this out …

This first image shows the information you can see on marriage entry in their BDM index if you are a non-member

This second one, shows what you see if you ARE a member! See the difference? See how much extra information you get?

It is similar for Births and Death entries as well.  So members now have much better BDM records, not just the snippet portion the old website gave you.

From having a play with it, it is good, there’s no doubt about that. But it still doesn’t beat using the Digger disks if you have access to them. They allow you to search in all sorts of weird configurations which helps you find all those family members, including those with names spelt different.

But more is still to come. The announcement of this Upgrade on their website states the following …

“This upgrade allows Genealogy SA to finalise this project and move on with planning for an even bigger upgrade early in 2015. The 2015 upgrade will allow us to improve search criteria, and to progressively add a large number of indexes and datasets to to our site. Many of these will be member only access, but some will be available in full or part to all visitors. The next upgrade will provide opportunities for us to significantly expand and diversify our on-line resources.”

So if you are one of the many who let their GenealogySA membership lapse because you felt you weren’t getting value for money, maybe it’s time for a rethink.
