FamilySearch WorldThis week FamilySearch has added 23.9 million indexed records to their collection on online data. These records relate to the following countries: Belgium, Brazil, Colombia, England, Italy, Mexico, and the United States.

Notable collection updates include the 19,206,333 images from the new UK World War I Service Records 1914-1920 collection, the 2,005,113 index records from the US World War I Draft Registration Cards 1917-1918 collection, and the 930,622 index records from the New York Passenger and Crew Lists, 1925-1942, collection. You can see the table below for the full list of updates. And you can search all of these collections and more than 3.5 billion other records for free at FamilySearch.org.

Searchable historic records are made available on FamilySearch.org through the help of thousands of volunteers from around the world. These volunteers transcribe (index) information from digital copies of handwritten records to make them easily searchable online. More volunteers are needed (particularly those who can read foreign languages) to keep pace with the large number of digital images being published online at FamilySearch.org. NOTE: Although I can’t see anything formally written about this, when I was trying to view the UK World War I Service Records it comes up with the message:

This image is viewable:
1. When using the site at a family history center.
2. To signed-in members of supporting organizations.

So it looks like you won’t be able to view these images at home, which although is a shame, no doubt it would be to do with the arrangement that FamilySearch has with The National Archives. As for what the ‘supporting organizations’ are, without checking with FamilySearch I’m sorry but I don’t know. If I happen to be wrong with this information, please do let me know.
