I would like to introduce you to a new research project that the Ryde District Historical Society from New South Wales, have just begun. Titled ‘Ryde Goes to War’, the Society has taken on the challenge of gathering data on World War 1 Service personel who have a strong connection with the City of Ryde in Sydney. The suburbs covered by the Ryde Municipality are Ryde, North Ryde, Macquarie Park, Chatswood West, Marsfield, Eastwood, Denistone, Denistone East, Denistone West, West Ryde, Melrose Park, Meadowbank, Putney, Tennyson Point, Gladesville and East Ryde.

The Society has already compiled a list of over 1,000 names from various monuments, memorials, school honour boards etc. in the area, each of which they need to research. So if you are able to help out with any information or memorabilia relating to men (or women) in WW1 from this region, the Ryde District Historical Society would really love to hear from you.

As you can imagine this is a long term project which is expected to take a number of years, but the Group’s aim is that have the majority of the information by end of 2014.
