Although this title is not a “list of all Scottish residents to 1860” it does provide a very extensive list of Scots who were in the area during that period. If you had family living in New South Wales in 1928, have you thought of looking at the Police Gazettes for information? These are a historian’s goldmine of information. Compiled to be distributed amongst the Police Force only, these Gazettes contain information that can not be found anywhere else. Far from just listing those who were in the Police Force, or those that were on the ‘wrong side’ of the law – you will also find entries of missing persons, or they might be a witness to crime, or they may have had something stolen from them, or they may even have found an item, and reported it to the Police.

Directories are a valuable resource of historian information. You can use them to locate people, their occupation and address. Useful even more in Australia because of the lack of census records that are available.

Victorian Government Gazette 1879 – DATA CD – $47.50
Generally issued weekly, although Supplementary issues were released from time-to-time, this CD contains all issues that were released during 1879.

England

Buckinghamshire Parish Registers: Great Hampden 1557-1812 – DATA CD – $25.00
Edited by Ernest Arthur Ebblewhite, and published in 1888, this title contains transcriptions of the parish records from the Parish of Great Hampden in Buckinghamshire. Lancashire Parish Registers: Whalley 1538-1601 – DATA CD – $25.00
Whalley is in Lancashire and also Yorkshire. This CD contains the parish registers from this church.
