Young women as fair game? In 1832, the British government sent 400 young single women to Sydney and Hobart to balance the male-dominated societies. The two ships were the ‘Red Rover’ from Cork and the ‘Princess Royal’ from London. Viewed as colourful butterflies alighting on the antipodean shores, the women were ‘fair game’ for employers and potential husbands. This book analyses how this migration was allowed to happen while telling the women’s stories, describing who netted them in the hiring scramble and how they ultimately spread their wings.

Trevor May shows how undertakers catered for these complex and sober events, and the various funeral options they offered to mourners, and to those who carefully prepared for their own death. While one Victorian authoress was able to claim that ‘It is on the deathbed that the rich and poor are equalised’, the author assesses the extent to which funerals reflected the social divisions within the nineteenth-century society.

In his Memoirs, Ker offers a unique and detailed examination of the foreign policy and foreign adventurers of both the established government in London and the governments abroad, relative to the Jacobites and to Britain’s growing interests throughout the world. Naturally, it is a European world as seen and reported by a man seeking to justify his activities over almost 40 years of nefarious and duplicitous activity, but it provides insight into the workings of European governments over that entire period.

This work aroused intense interest among both the popular and academic historians of the day, for it reprinted major portions of early chronicles and histories which long had been unavailable other than at research libraries. More importantly, Gregg contrasted what those primary sources “said” to what contemporary historians of his own age were writing about those same issues or periods. The controversy over the Picts and the Scots was one such issue. Among the topics included were early Pictish history and language, early Celtic Christianity, the Book of Deer, Macbeth, the origins of clans, and the Wallace-Bruce era of Scottish history. Gregg was primarily interested in presenting the ancient chronicles as a source of information to be used to check and correct modern historians. Today, it is an essential work for anyone interested in the period 600-1350, in great part because of this presentation of early materials, and because of the contrast between the early chronicles and the 19th-century historians.

How can scrapbooking and family trees NOT go together perfectly?

Scrapbooking is process of creating visual memoirs (a record) … and family history/genealogy is the finding and recording of your ancestors and descendants … so in combining them “Family Tree Scrapbooking” is created … the art of visually recording your family history … sometimes called Heritage Scrapbooking.

Years are usually spent researching, so why not spend some time creating a visual record which you can show off your ancestral roots to other family members and friends?

Over the last few years scrapbooking companies have caught on to the genealogy trend, and as such there are now numerous ranges of papers available for the Family Tree Scrapbooker. There are pages that allow for family group sheets, family pedigrees, and family memoirs.

This post is really just to show you the collections of scrapbooking papers that include Pedigree and Family Group Sheet papers. Each lists the manufacturer together with the Collection they are from.

These heritage scrapbooking papers are listed in alphabetical order to make it easier, so check out these great pages and tell us what you think.

That’s right … WE PAY YOU TO SCRAP!!

Why, you ask? We are wanting to have some sample pages made that we can use for displays and promotions, so we are on the look-out for keen crafters, die-hard scrappers or those that have the time to do a bit of scrapping.

This is “the first of a new series of post-war Service volumes which will provide a contemporary record of developments in the Australian Navy, Army, and Air Force”. The As You Were series completed the series of books produced during the Second World War by the Australian War Memorial. The contents of the book are again the work of service and ex-service men and women and the views expressed are those of the writers – unlike the volumes published during the war, the authors of these contributions are named.

As You Were: A cavalcade of events with the Australian Services from 1788 to 1947, “adds another volume to the story of the Australian Navy, Army and Air Force which was continued in As You Were 1946 from the volumes published during the First and Second World Wars”. The sixty-seven stories in the volume are again the work of service and ex-service personnel.

Apart from the annual roll (published in January 1906), the CD includes the additional rolls published in February, April, June, August, and October 1906.

Carlton: A History – P. Yule – $39.95 REPRINT
The contributors reveal how, since its initial subdivision in the early 1850s, Carlton has been home to Melbourne’s most diverse ethnic and social heritage: from the early bourgeoisie, who built the grand terrace houses of south Carlton, to successive waves of immigrants who have enlivened the community. They capture the excitement of the nationally important social movements that sprang to life in Carlton–from the eight-hour day campaign of the 1850s to the experimental theatre of the1960s and 1970s–and show how the Carlton Association’s fight with the Housing Commission in the 1960s did much to determine the character of Melbourne’s inner suburbs in to the twenty-first century. Throughout, the major institutions and architecturally significant buildings that characterise the suburb, are illuminated.

Battles often are cited as turning points in the history of a region, and thus the Battle of Stamford Bridge, the Battle of Hastings and the Battle of Largs become fixed points in the mind of students of Britain. In 1263, the great Scandinavian king Hakon collected an enormous fleet of ships, with troops to match, and sailed for Scotland, only to be defeated by a combination of weather and the Scots army. While all agree that this was not the battle to end Norse authority in Scotland, it was a battle which captured the popular imagination in the 18th and 19th centuries.

When this book first appeared, it broke entirely new ground. Here, for the first time, was an orderly, logical, method of studying and identifying Scotland’s most famous symbol — the tartan. James Scarlett, the greatest tartan authority of the late 20th century, has given us a concise guide to the history of tartan. He describes in detail over 180 different tartans, and explains the principles of the designs and simplifies their identification. Whether you are a beginner or have been studying tartans for years, this is an invaluable work, one you will consult again and again.

Edited by Adam Gunn and John Mackay, this is a history of the county of Sutherland, with introductory chapters which trace the history of the region down to 1800, and with a subsequent chapter on the home life and customs of the region.
