Trevor May shows how undertakers catered for these complex and sober events, and the various funeral options they offered to mourners, and to those who carefully prepared for their own death. While one Victorian authoress was able to claim that ‘It is on the deathbed that the rich and poor are equalised’, the author assesses the extent to which funerals reflected the social divisions within the nineteenth-century society.

In his Memoirs, Ker offers a unique and detailed examination of the foreign policy and foreign adventurers of both the established government in London and the governments abroad, relative to the Jacobites and to Britain’s growing interests throughout the world. Naturally, it is a European world as seen and reported by a man seeking to justify his activities over almost 40 years of nefarious and duplicitous activity, but it provides insight into the workings of European governments over that entire period.

Controversial Issues in Scottish History – DATA CD – $29.50
This work aroused intense interest among both the popular and academic historians of the day, for it reprinted major portions of early chronicles and histories which long had been unavailable other than at research libraries. More importantly, Gregg contrasted what those primary sources “said” to what contemporary historians of his own age were writing about those same issues or periods. The controversy over the Picts and the Scots was one such issue. Among the topics included were early Pictish history and language, early Celtic Christianity, the Book of Deer, Macbeth, the origins of clans, and the Wallace-Bruce era of Scottish history. Gregg was primarily interested in presenting the ancient chronicles as a source of information to be used to check and correct modern historians. Today, it is an essential work for anyone interested in the period 600-1350, in great part because of this presentation of early materials, and because of the contrast between the early chronicles and the 19th-century historians.

Lewis gives details about every parish, town and village in Ireland, including numbers of inhabitants, the economy, history, topography, religion and parish structures, administration and courts, schools, and much more. ‘Fox’s History of Queensland’ is similar to the Cyclopedias that were published for most states of Australia around the beginning of the 20th Century. These (including Fox’s) are a vast resource of historical and biographical information – consisting of information on the people, towns, industries, professional, commercial and social institutions and much more. ‘Fox’s History of Queensland’ is the largest of these publications and is extremely rare to find copies.

Published in 1888, William Frederic Morrison produced the ‘Aldine Centennial History of New South Wales’ in a two volume set as a comprehensive and beautifully illustrated record of the history of New South Wales and its prominent inhabitants.

Picturesque Atlas of Australasia 1886-88 – DATA CD – $59.50
Published in Sydney in 1886-88, the enormous, multi-volume ‘Picturesque Atlas of Australia’ was an attempt with words and pictures to describe the Australia of the time. Its publication was one of the most significant cultural projects in 19th-century Australia. Writers, artists, academics, and politicians came together to prepare a book of unprecedented grandeur and ambition, and a publishing company was established to publish it. The 1100+ engravings on steel and wood contained in the Picturesque Atlas were among the finest engravings to be found anywhere in the world at this time, and many of the illustrations were specially commissioned works by leading Australian artists of the era, for the publication.

Grantees of Arms Volumes 1 and 2 – DATA CD – $50.00
Published by The Harleain Society in three large books. Volume one contains the names of those granted the right to bear arms to the end of the seventeenth century. The second and third books cover the years 1687 to 1898. The Heralds at the College of Arms consider these books to be one of the most important reference sources available to them and we consider ourselves extremely fortunate to be able to make them available on CD to historians and genealogists all over the world.

One thing that you will learn when beginning family history research is that there are no standards for abbreviations (except for a few exceptions). Each resource seems to have its own system. This lack of uniformity prompted the author to start recording these references, and in 1995 ‘Abbreviations for Genealogists’ was released.

The Australian Cyclopedias are an incredibly important resource for all historians researching Australian history, but just what are they, and what do they contain? Firstly the definition of ‘cyclopedia’ from the dictionary states that it is a reference work (often in several volumes) containing articles on various topics (often arranged in alphabetical order) dealing with the entire range of human knowledge or with some particular specialty. This pretty much sums up what these Cyclopedias are … multi-volume sets, which contain so much biographical and social history of the era, that nothing really compares.

In 1856 the remote colony of South Australia had the secret ballot, votes for all adult men, and religious freedom, and in 1857 self-government by an elected parliament. While the first code of regulations for the Royal Irish Constabulary had been published in 1837, the year after the service had been reorganised, it was not until 1866 the a complete manual was issued, entitled The Royal Irish Constabulary Manual; or Guide to the Discharge of Police Duties. The preface to this was written by J. Stewart Wood, Inspector General of the Constabulary Force in Ireland and in this Wood noted that while it was impossible to anticipate every event and and difficulty a policeman might encounter while attempting to discharge his duty, the Constabulary Manual would afford many of the answers to many of the questions and be suggestive of others.

This journal will help you write your unique story – for your family and friends, and for those not yet born. In times gone by, when many people were unable to read or write, families passed down stories about their ancestors – from one generation to the next – by word of mouth. Sadly, this tradition has largely been lost. For example, how much do you know about your great grandparents? Similarly, your own memories of your life and those of your parents may be vivid in your mind, but they too will be lost to your children and grandchildren – and their children – unless you write them down.

The Forgotten Explorers: Pioneer Geologists of Western Australia 1826-1926 – J. Glover & J. Bevan – $40.00
Who were the great Australian explorers? Most people immediately think of men like Burke and Wills, Giles, Sturt, Grey, Stuart, Leichhardt, Kennedy and Eyre: and it is true that, besides their achievements, all of these suffered great hardships, and some perished, making them more memorable historically.

However, in Western Australia, during the first century of settlement, there were other explorers, largely unknown, who traversed equally dangerous and desolate regions, but they were resolute and skilled bushmen who did not perish, became lost, or have to be rescued. They returned without fuss or acclaim, to write reports and get ready for their next journeys. There were, of course, a few colourful characters associated with this saga, and we look closely at them too.

Tasmania’s Convicts: How Felons Built a Free Society – A. Alexander – $45.00
To the convicts arriving in Van Diemen’s Land, it must have felt as though they’d been sent to the very ends of the earth. In Tasmania’s Convicts Alison Alexander tells the history of the men and women transported to what became one of Britain’s most notorious convict colonies. Following the lives of dozens of convicts and their families, she uncovers stories of success, failure, and everything in between. While some suffered harsh conditions, most served their time and were freed, becoming ordinary and peaceful citizens. Yet over the decades, a terrible stigma became associated with the convicts, and they and the whole colony went to extraordinary lengths to hide it.

The book is divided into four parts – the Australasian Colonies, the Pacific Islands, the Far East, and Spanish America.

The Government Gazettes are a unique, useful and extremely fascinating resource for local, family and social historians and researchers in other fields throughout Australia. They were published by the government as a means of communication to officials and the general public and therefore contain information that is of great use in establishing an image of Australia and its people in the past.

The saga of the Courtney’s commences in Ireland, and moves to Australia during the gold rush where the family soon became heavily involved in the local volunteer movement at Castlemaine. Military service became a tradition carried through four generations, embracing not only the Great War and Gallipoli where two brothers served as officers, but also the 19139-45 War with one family member serving as a doctor in the RAN and the other as a doctor in the British Army, landing with the paras in Arnhem, where he was captured by the Germans.

In these he represents himself as an explorer in the service of his country, as an anthoropologist gathering knowledge about Aboriginal Australia, and as an exemplary Australian bushman, at a time when the bushman legend was in its gensis and the nation was yet to be. Most of all, he appears as the representative of the law, working to make the country safe for the ‘brave pioneers who push out the frontier’. After his murder trial in 1891, he becomes its martyr.

Life in exile for over 350 prisoners and scores of warders on a small island in colonial Brisbane’s Moreton Bay. Was it purgatory or paradise? This book reveals the evidence. For more than 60 years from 1867, St Helena was home to thousands of society’s outcasts, for here was located colonial Queensland’s foremost prison for men.

Following his life as a roving bushman he resided in Sydney.

The contributors reveal how, since its initial subdivision in the early 1850s, Carlton has been home to Melbourne’s most diverse ethnic and social heritage: from the early bourgeoisie, who built the grand terrace houses of south Carlton, to successive waves of immigrants who have enlivened the community. They capture the excitement of the nationally important social movements that sprang to life in Carlton–from the eight-hour day campaign of the 1850s to the experimental theatre of the1960s and 1970s–and show how the Carlton Association’s fight with the Housing Commission in the 1960s did much to determine the character of Melbourne’s inner suburbs in to the twenty-first century. Throughout, the major institutions and architecturally significant buildings that characterise the suburb, are illuminated.

Battles often are cited as turning points in the history of a region, and thus the Battle of Stamford Bridge, the Battle of Hastings and the Battle of Largs become fixed points in the mind of students of Britain. In 1263, the great Scandinavian king Hakon collected an enormous fleet of ships, with troops to match, and sailed for Scotland, only to be defeated by a combination of weather and the Scots army. While all agree that this was not the battle to end Norse authority in Scotland, it was a battle which captured the popular imagination in the 18th and 19th centuries.

When this book first appeared, it broke entirely new ground. Here, for the first time, was an orderly, logical, method of studying and identifying Scotland’s most famous symbol — the tartan. James Scarlett, the greatest tartan authority of the late 20th century, has given us a concise guide to the history of tartan. He describes in detail over 180 different tartans, and explains the principles of the designs and simplifies their identification. Whether you are a beginner or have been studying tartans for years, this is an invaluable work, one you will consult again and again.

Edited by Adam Gunn and John Mackay, this is a history of the county of Sutherland, with introductory chapters which trace the history of the region down to 1800, and with a subsequent chapter on the home life and customs of the region.

“The Floating Brothel” is the antidote for bodice-ripping history, exposing the story of 237 female convicts – mainly taken from London’s fever-ridden, overcrowded Newgate Gaol – to the fledgling colony of New South Wales. Though it was percieved that the ship was rife with prostitution and debauchery, the reality was more complex and more interesting, differing dramatically from the well-known stories of hellish journeys to Australia.

This 64 page book, was originally published 1923. The primary purpose of this work is to provide an alphabetical guide to English names used in Ireland which have been altered or anglicised from their Gaelic original. For example, Adams is originally from Mac Adaim, who are described as being a branch from the MacGregors of southwestern Scotland. Each of these entries, therefore, attempts to track the original name back to either its Irish or its Scottish origins.
