This covers news from any group, society, museum, archive office throughout Australia. Some of the following news articles have been submitted to us, while others have been found from websites, newspapers and other articles.

We love promoting genealogy and history throughout Australia and the smaller groups are just as important as the big state societies. So if you have news, events, need for help or donations, or have a request – please advise, we’d love to hear.

NEW SOUTH WALES
Bega – reunion
The Bega District News recently made mention of the recent Wood family reunion. The reunion centered on the descendants of Peter Horsman Wood (1838-1907) who once lived at Yarranung from 1869 to his death in 1907. When the Wood brothers arrived in Sydney in Jun 1860, Peter came to Bega while his else brother John went droving in Queensland and lost touch with the family. John spent his time well, and recorded his experiences in the form of a novel. The recently published “Tom Hurstbourne or A Squatters Life” can be bought from various bookshops. For more on this book there is a good write up on the GG Books site.

Hunter Valley – website
If you have queries or research relating to the Hunter Region (which encompasses Maitland, Morpeth, Murrurundi, Newcastle, Paterson, Raymond Terrace, Seaham, Stroud, and Wollombi), the Hunter Valley Genealogy website has a forum you can put queries on.

Taree – Manning Wallamba Family History Society
2010 marks the 25th year of the Manning Wallamba Family History Society, and they have been celebrating with various events throughout the year already. One thing they are doing all year is asking founding and long-term members to contribute their memories of the early day of the Society. These are being published in their quarterly journal The Fig Tree, which you can find on their website.

QUEENSLAND
Nerang – Gold Coast Family History Society
The Gold Coast Family History Society (GCFHS) recently became an affiliated library of the Famiy History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). Access has been granted to over 2.4 million rolls of microfilm and 727,000 microfiches sheets. These can be ordered online at Family Search and viewed at GHFHS library for a nominal charge.

Warwick – Smitten family history
Lindsay and Marcella Berry of Warwick have been painstakingly penning books on their family history. But these books are not available in any old book store. They are for the Berry’s personal library, a documentation of their lives for future generations. The series is called Smitten and the Berrys have already finished the first three instalments, with another four in the pipeline. Starting with themselves and recording their own history, they say there is plenty to come, with some future editions set to date back to their ancestors. The full article can be read on the Warwick Daily News.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Avon – Town history
The South Australian country town of Avon held a reunion as part of SA History Week and at the same time the local district hall’s 50th birthday. Avon was once a vibrant little farming village and many have a story of either growing up in the community or visiting for some reason.  Although this is a little late, and missed the reunion as they were asking for people who had stories relating to the town and its residents to contact them, I have no doubt that those organising the event would still love to hear from anyone who would like to pass on their stories. Email avon5501@yahoo.com.au or mail RSD Box 1050, Avon SA 5501.

Lobethal – Lobethal Museum
Also as part of the SA History Week 2010 celebrations, the Lobethal Museum recently celebrated it’s 50th Anniversary. This church museum also houses the little “seminary”, erected in 1845, the first three Australian-trained Lutheran pastors graduated in 1855. For inquiries regarding the museum please phone Rose on (08) 8389 6825.

Lobethal – National Costume Museum
‘The Courier’ newspaper recently reported that the privately owned National Costume Museum which has been on diplay in the former Onkaparinga Woollen Mill at Lobethal, now has a new home. Previously reported on Postcards, the owners of this spectacular 4000 piece collection, which contains items of clothing dating from 1812 through to 2000, rejected numerous offers from overseas buyers, as they wished for the collection to stay in South Australia. The collection will be left to the National Trust and it will be housed at the Millicent National Trust Living History Musuem.

Quorn – Quorn Masonic Lodge
Quorn Masonic Lodge No. 59 are celebrating their centenary on July 10-11 2010. Photographs are wanted for inclusion in booklet and for display on the weekend. Also, photographs of the building in Railway Terrace when occupied by the Salvation Army until 1908 and Quorn High School from 1909-1923. Phone Maureen (08) 8648 6420 or email emmccoll@yahoo.com

Tea Tree Gully – Library Local History Room
The City of Tea Tree Gully Local History room has embarked on a project to dicover more about the story of the men listed on the plaques on the War Memorial arch. Twenty-four men’s names are recorded on this memorial. Sixteen were born in this area, went to school, worked and married local girls from this area. Five paid the supreme sacrifice. Each one has an incredible story to tell. To learn more about this and other local history, contact the Tea Tree Gully Library Local History Room on (08) 8397 7467 or www.teatreegully.sa.gov.au.

Scott Creek – Scott Creek History Group
The Scorr Creek comminuty recently celebrated the opening of new clubrooms at the Scott Creek Oval. The Scott Creek History Group was involved by setting up a display of photographs tracing the history of the oval.

Wallaroo – Welsh history
The Yorke Peninsula Country Times reports that as part of the St David’s Day Copper 150 sesquicentenary celebrations held in Wallaroo, local historian and chairperson of the Wallaroo Heritage and Nautical Museum and National Trust, Colin Boase, presented a brief synopsis of the Welsh influence in Wallaroo and the history of the Welsh churches. As the Welsh were experts in the field of smelting, their services were much sought after in the 1860s. A number were brought direct from Wales to settle in Wallaroo. The full article can be read online here.

South Australia’s Historic Buildings in Danger
The Sunday Mail recently had an article making mention that 100s of ‘character’ buildings and old homes across South Australia are at risk of demolition because of a perceived “lack of will” towards protecting the state’s heritage. In a survey it found about half of SA’s 66 councils (mostly rural), do not have heritage lists or registers that protect buildings of local significance. Among the 29 councils without heritage protection are Yankallila, Naracoorte Lucindale, Port Lincoln, Whyalla, Yorke Peninsula and the cradle of the state’s mining past, the Copper Coast. You can read the full article here.

VICTORIA
Brighton – Brighton Historical Society
The Brighton Historical Society was a recipient of the ‘Sir Rupert Hamer Records Management Award for providing greater understanding and access to community archives for cataloguing their entire map and plan collection. Volunteers contributed more than 500 hours to digitise the maps and plans. The originals are now preserved and copies are made available for the public to use. Fantastic work!!

Drysdale – Bellarine Historical Society
Congratulation to the Bellarine Historical Society, on their recent ‘Sir Rupert Hamer Records Management Award’. They were recognised for their work digitising and indexing original school registers. The project began after a committee member retrieved from the rubbish old records from two schools closed in the 1990s. The historical society has also transferred the original registers, indexes and photographs to PROV, and written a brief history of each school. So many records would be lost without groups like this historical society. Thank you for helping to preserve history!!

St Kilda – Jewish Museum of Australia
Recent news on the Tracing the Tribe blog mentions that The Australian government will contribute $200,000 to develop the Zelman Cowen Gallery of Australian Jewish History at the Jewish Museum of Australia. The museum is planning to raise $1.5 million to bring the project to life. The government hopes its contribution will encourage the Jewish and general Australian community, State government and other sectors to support the project. The Jewish Museum of Australia was established to explore and share the Jewish experience in Australia and benefit Australia’s diverse society.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA
So who am I talking about?

Recently Gould Genealogy was privileged to have Elaine Collins from FindMyPast.co.uk come and visit … and we managed to get just a few pics in before she left as proof (but that’s later).

Firstly the meetings …
While in Australia, Elaine took the opportunity to speak to the Australian public about the various companies owned by brightsolid (FindMyPast.co.uk, Scotland’s People, Genes Reunited, and 1911Census.co.uk). What they are, how to get around them, what’s the difference between them, and what they are looking at for the future etc.

The exciting part … the new website …
While here Elaine took the to opportunity to announce that FindMyPast.com.au (which bought WorldVitalRecords.com.au) is now up and running with 35 million Australian records online. You’ll find government gazettes, police gazette, post office directories, electoral rolls, biographical books and more. FindMyPast.com.au are offering a free 24 hour trial (with no credit card required), so why not give it a try. You can also subscribe to a free regular newsletter so you can keep up to date with this new site. Go to FindMyPast.com.au to find out more.

Now for the thankyous …
Before I get to the photos, I must say some thankyous – as these meetings wouldn’t happened without the help of a number of people. Firstly to Heathrow Airport for staying open just long enough for Elaine’s flight to take off (it did close 3hrs after she left), secondly to Elaine for coping with the hectic schedule that we had arranged for her (6 meetings in 6 days, in 4 states). Also to Alan Phillips (Gould Genealogy/Unlock the Past) and Aimee Engler (Unlock the Past) for physically arranging the meetings. For the helpers we had at the meetings (Rosemary Kopittke, Bruce Smith, Helen Smith, Kerry Farmer, Anthea Phillips, Jenny Sampson and Alona Tester) – your help was certainly appreciated and needed. But we have to thank each of you for taking the time to come to our event, to hear about the exciting happenings with online data for both the UK and Australia.

And I know you’ve been waiting for the pics …

good to know that both Rosemary and Elaine did manage enjoy a brief break

So for genealogists and historians researching UK or Australian records, this has to be a good thing for everyone, as more records are added online regularly.

When the collection is securely uploaded, it will hopefully be viewable in a public domain.” If you wish to contact the, their details are on their website.

Of great interest to ship-lovers, family genealogists and maritime historians, and an essential reference book for librarians, museum staff, and researchers in many fields.
The Floating Brothel: The Extraordinary Story of Female Convicts Bound for Botany Bay – S. Rees – $24.95 NEW EDITION
“The Floating Brothel” is the antidote for bodice-ripping history, exposing the story of 237 female convicts – mainly taken from London’s fever-ridden, overcrowded Newgate Gaol – to the fledgling colony of New South Wales. Though it was percieved that the ship was rife with prostitution and debauchery, the reality was more complex and more interesting, differing dramatically from the well-known stories of hellish journeys to Australia.

Men of Mont St Quentin: Between Victory and Death – P. Stanley – $35.00
In the hands of Peter Stanley, one of Australia’s leading military historians, a famous battlefield in France becomes unforgettably connected with Australian men and their families in the long aftermath of the Great War.

Capital: Melbourne When it Was the Capital City of Australia 1901-27 – K. Otto – $39.95
In 1901 the Australian colonies came together to form a new nation which, for the next twenty-six years, was governed from Melbourne. It was a small city, a place where people knew each other – not just the people who mattered, but those who didn’t yet – where small changes loomed large and the import of big changes could scarcely be imagined. Yet in the extraordinary first quarter of the twentieth century, as the world lurched headlong into a new era, this overgrown town, in all but name the nation’s capital, oversaw the birth of modern Australia.

The Convicts of the ‘Eleanor’: Protest in Rural England, New Lives in Australia – D. Kent & N. Townsend – $49.95
The convicts transported on the ‘Eleanor’ in February 1831 were not hardened criminals. The men on board – impoverished agricultural labourers and rural craftsmen from the counties of Berkshire, Hampshire, Wiltshire and Dorset – were transported because they were ‘Swing rioters’ – men who dared to demand a modest wage-increase and the preservation of winter work threatened by the threshing machine.

Macbeth: King, Queen, and Clan – DATA CD – $34.50
Perhaps with the exception of Robert the Bruce, no Scottish king is so famous as Macbeth ? and yet, what do we really know about him? If our only reference is Shakespeare’s play, then he was a power-hungry monster, taking life and throne from the rightful king. His queen was even worse. But, as John Macbeth here shows, he was of an ancient Celtic family, the hereditary ruler of Moray, and a popular leader with a strong personal following. This is an excellent introduction to the murky history of Macbeth, his queen, and his clan down through Scottish history.

Here are presented the genealogical and historical records of all branches of the Sutherland family holding titles of nobility that is included in Sir James Balfour-Paul’s monumental work “The Scots Peerage”.

Originally published 1883. 63 pages, this facsimile of the book is a thorough genealogical study of the various Pollock families settling in Pennsylvania in the colonial period. As well as the descendants of Oliver, there is extensive material on the descendants of John, James, and Charles Pollock, brother who emigrated from Coleraine, Ireland about 1750, and the descendants of Samuel Pollock of Chester and Dauphin Counties.

This is their story, the story of Van Diemen’s Land.

Alistair and Henrietta Tayler worked as a team to record the history and activities of the Jacobites in Scotland during the 18th century, and their work, noted in the first half of the 20th century and later for its quality, has remained an invaluable source of historical information on some of the most important figures in Scottish history.

The Heriots of Ramornie were an ancient Fifeshire family of modest beginnings who over the course of many centuries slowly increased their lands and their position. They were seldom on the national scene and they held no national office in church or state. They were ardent reformers during the Reformation, adhering to the religion of John Knox but careful never to become too exposed to danger from those higher up. They carefully avoided passionate commitment either to the royalist or the parliamentary cause during the 17th century. Younger sons went into business, while the eldest son managed the estate. They lived a simple, pious, cautious life. There were more senior branches of the family in Berwickshire, and other branches were scattered here and there. This work, then, records the life and times of one branch of the Heriots from around 1476 to the end of the 19th century. Included is information on each generation of the family and its history and genealogy, as well as material on seals and arms.

John Graham of Claverhouse first and foremost claimed to be a military commander, a loyal soldier who accepted and carried out orders without overall concern for religious or political ideology. He served for decades on the continent, where he trained as a soldier of fortune, and he was respected both by King Charles II and his brother King James VII, and by Prince William of Orange. He was employed to maintain order in portions of Scotland committed to Covenanter or Presbyterian religious beliefs, and he was charged, often without proof, of atrocities against those Covenanters in the period after 1660 and the Restoration of King Charles II.

Based on personal accounts and the recollections of six Japanese soldiers, captured diaries and the unit diaries of the Australian forces, this powerful re-examination of Kokoda brings a new perspective to one of the most brutal conflicts in Australian war history.

Alexander Mackenzie’s massive study of the Monroes was published as The History of the Munros of Foulis, and has from its publication to the 21st century been one of the most respected and consulted accounts of this venerable Scottish family. This publication continues and expands that earlier work by detailing the genealogy and history of the Irish branch of the Monro family. Major Daniel Munro of the House of Obsdale, accompanied by his brother Robert and his nephew George, went to Ireland in 1642 in the army commanded by General Robert Munro. For the next ten years or so, he fought in Ireland, and in 1666 was rewarded by King Charles II with the lands of Lower Iveagh. It therefore was through this third son of George Munro of Obsdale that we have the link between the Scottish and the Irish branches of the Munro family. This history contains extensive materials on the history of the Munroes in Ireland and in North America, from their arrival in Ireland in 1642 through the end of the 19th century.

This is a historical and genealogical account of a family primarily from its “Scots-Irish” origins into North America, with a secondary interest in various Patten lines which have an English descent.

Originally published in 1904, de Ruvigny’s important work is the only source for the genealogical information — as well as the details of the creations themselves — pertaining to the titles of nobility granted by the exiled Stewart kings after the Revolution of 1688 and extending to 1784. There is a wealth of information here, with descendants in many cases as recent as the early 20th century. While there are English, Scottish, and Irish titles of nobility granted and here studied, the book is of particular interest to the Scottish families of Cameron, Dillon, Drummond, Erskine, Fforester, Fraser, Graeme, Grant, Hay, Lumisden, MacDonald, MacDonell, MacGregor, Mackenzie, Mackintosh, Maclean, MacLeod, Murray, Oliphant, Ramsay, Robertson, Sempill, and Stewart.

The Loyal Clans – DATA CD – $34.50
This history of the Highland families or clans who remained loyal to the Hanoverian government during the Jacobite rebellions is one of the most insightful and impressive studies ever done on the period in the late 17th and 18th centuries, when families — father and son, brother and brother — decided which way to turn in the struggle between the exiled Stuarts and the government established after 1688. It is a reflective, analytical, and incredibly well researched study of what happens between and within families torn by complex issues of self-interest, loyalty to constituted authority, religious obedience, and anger between competing local families. This study begins with a consideration of the type of politics which existed in the Highlands and then looks at the Lords of the Isles, the Stewart monarchy, royal lieutenants, the Clan Gregor, and the divine right of kings, as well as the new order emerging by the early 19th century. While the book is essential to anyone studying the Jacobite period, it has extensive materials on the following families: Cameron, Campbell, Forbes, Fraser, Gordon, Graham, Grant, Hamilton, MacDonald, MacGregor, MacIan, Mackay, Mackenzie, Mackintosh, MacLean, MacLeod, MacPherson, Menzies, Munro, Murray, Robertson, Ross, Stewart, and Sutherland.

The early history of this Scottish family is uncertain, but by 1246 there is concrete evidence of the family established as proprietors of Strathtay and styled Thanes of Lochtay. The destruction and disappearance of early manuscripts and documents for this family leaves many gaps, and it is only as the history unfolds into the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries that the documentation significantly increases. The first Macnachtans settled in Ireland in the 16th century, and this history records their story as well as that of the family in Scotland. Many of the clan as well were long involved in India, and the 19th and 20th centuries saw members of the family seeking career and fortune there. There also is collateral genealogical material on the Dunkin, Stafford, Echlin, and Blackers families.

In the 19th century, Alexander Mackenzie was the premier historian of the great Scottish families, and his extensive study of the Donald family long has been the standard by which such histories have been judged. Mackenzie studied the Donalds as the royal family of the Isles, the last of those who held semi-independent kingdoms in the west of Scotland.

Lochaber is a district in the south of mainland Inverness, and is bounded by Perthshire, Argyllshire, the Great Glen, and Badenoch. It was a region long isolated from the rest of Scotland, and until the appearance of the railroad in the 19th century, long retained its strong Celtic and Viking character and its preoccupation with a series of great families who for centuries had defined the course of its history.

This sheet allows for parents, and 4 children. If you have more children, you can always get some of Family Group Chart 2, which has room for another 6 children.

This is page 2 of the Family Group Chart from Bazzill Basics, and is needed if you have more that four children in a family. This is printed in the same format as Chart 1, heavy-weight card, brown and black printing on cream card, large photo boxes, and reasonable space to write.

If you’re creating a family tree heritage scrapbooking album, you will need a pedigree chart, and this is an ideal one for you. One the pages in the Bazzill Basics Heritage collection – this four generation chart allows you to fill in from yourself, back to your great grandparents.

So you’re creating a heritage album, and have some pages with photographs – these journalling boxes are a lovely (and easy) addition to your page. Journalling doesn’t mean writing a whole story, just a few lines about the photo, or people in the photo.

Bazzill Basics Heritage Note Cards (Vertical) – Scrapbooking – $2.40
A heritage album is not complete without some photos, and with photos comes journalling. This page from the Bazzill Basics Heritage collection comes as a 12″x12″ sheet which contains six journalling boxes each vertical, (there is another page which has them horizontal). Each measures 14.5cm x 10cm (5 1/2″ x 3 1/2″), and they are printed on heavy-weight cream coloured card and co-ordinate with other papers in the Bazzill Basics Heritage range.
