Cudlee Creek – Millbrook Primary School Closure
Sad news has been reported in the local “Courier” newspaper about the little Millbrook Primary School which has been running for 131 years, will be closing its doors at the end of 2010, due to lack of enrolments. The school Principal, Sam Stamos said the end of the year would feature an appropriate celebration to say goodbye to the school, which has survived the Ash Wednesday bushfires, and the flooding of the Millbrook township for the reservoir.

Moonta – Horn’s Re-enactment
The Yorke Peninsula Country Times recently reported on a symbolic re-enactment of William Horn’s horse ride from the Copper Coast to Adelaide on 2 June 1861, to lodge a claim for the Moonta Mines copper mining lease for W.W. Hughes. This re-enactment took place as part of the Copper 150 Sesquicentenary.
Port Adelaide – South Australian Maritime Museum
The Port Adelaide Heritage Project reported that in April/May 2010 archaeologists excavated several small trenches in the basement of the South Australian Maritime Museum. Part of the reason for this was to investigate and record details of the construction of the museum, and also search for artefacts that relate to its past function and use. The museum building was constructed as two separate buildings, one in 1854 the other in 1857, and they are among the oldest buildings at the Port. They were used to store good that had arrived on board ships. The full article about the excavation can be found on page 12 of the Port Adelaide Heritage Project [PDF link]

South Australia – Queen’s Birthday Honours
June 14th is an important day not only as that is the day Australia celebrates the Queen’s Birthday, but also because that is the day when Australians across the nation who have made a significant difference to their communities get recognition. Along with the 600+ people who were recognised are the following two (I know there are many more who deserve mentioning though).

Wayne Stidston PSM (Public Service Medal)
As the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) commemoration and project officer, Mr Stidston created the Adelaide Memorial Walk in 2003 to guide students and teachers around 11 of Adelaide’s city war memorials. The walk ends inside the National State War Memorial and highlights the 5500 South Australian’s who died in World War I. Stidston’s commitment to developing commemorative activities for the DVA was recognised with a Public Service Medal as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

John Dnistriansky (Medal of the Order of Australia)
John Dnistriansky’s earliest memories are of the sea voyage from Europe to Australia in 1949 when he was just 5. Born in Germany to Ukrainian parents, Mr Dnistriansky, now 65 says “my parents gave me the love of the Ukraine even though I wasn’t born there … Ukrainian history and culture are very important to me.” He is the president of the Association of Ukraines in South Australia, and has revived the Ukrainian Community Language School from just a handful of students to 50, as well as organising events which incorporates their traditional culture. As acknowledgement for his services to the Ukrainian community, Mr Dnistriansky was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).

TASMANIA
Campbell Town – Richardson Family Reunion
More than 200 years of Richardson family history came together at a reunion held at Campbell Town, Tasmania in June. Isaac Richardson and his brother Simeon were transported to Van Diemens Land in 1831 as Swing Rioters, before setting up their lives at Campbell Town. Fourth-generation descendent Beverley Richardson said more than 200 people took part in the reunion, with people coming from every corner of the country. Family members were asked to bring historic items relating to the family. “One of the things I liked the most was a set of paintbrushes that belonged to one of the descendants on the first family line … they were used by a father and grandfather to paint carriages in the early 1900s, and the pair went on to make cars.” A book compiled by Mrs Richardson was also launched during the reunion, detailing the history of the family. The full report is on the Northern Midland News website.

Port Arthur – Port Arthur Historic Site
Congratulations must go to the Port Arthur Historic Site as it has been honoured with one of Australia’s leading awards for the third year in succession. You can read the report online on the Gourmet Traveller site.

Bega – reunion
The Bega District News recently made mention of the recent Wood family reunion. The reunion centered on the descendants of Peter Horsman Wood (1838-1907) who once lived at Yarranung from 1869 to his death in 1907. When the Wood brothers arrived in Sydney in Jun 1860, Peter came to Bega while his else brother John went droving in Queensland and lost touch with the family. John spent his time well, and recorded his experiences in the form of a novel. The recently published “Tom Hurstbourne or A Squatters Life” can be bought from various bookshops. For more on this book there is a good write up on the GG Books site.

Hunter Valley – website
If you have queries or research relating to the Hunter Region (which encompasses Maitland, Morpeth, Murrurundi, Newcastle, Paterson, Raymond Terrace, Seaham, Stroud, and Wollombi), the Hunter Valley Genealogy website has a forum you can put queries on.

Taree – Manning Wallamba Family History Society
2010 marks the 25th year of the Manning Wallamba Family History Society, and they have been celebrating with various events throughout the year already. One thing they are doing all year is asking founding and long-term members to contribute their memories of the early day of the Society. These are being published in their quarterly journal The Fig Tree, which you can find on their website.

QUEENSLAND
Nerang – Gold Coast Family History Society
The Gold Coast Family History Society (GCFHS) recently became an affiliated library of the Famiy History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). Access has been granted to over 2.4 million rolls of microfilm and 727,000 microfiches sheets. These can be ordered online at Family Search and viewed at GHFHS library for a nominal charge.

Warwick – Smitten family history
Lindsay and Marcella Berry of Warwick have been painstakingly penning books on their family history. But these books are not available in any old book store. They are for the Berry’s personal library, a documentation of their lives for future generations. The series is called Smitten and the Berrys have already finished the first three instalments, with another four in the pipeline. Starting with themselves and recording their own history, they say there is plenty to come, with some future editions set to date back to their ancestors. The full article can be read on the Warwick Daily News.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Avon – Town history
The South Australian country town of Avon held a reunion as part of SA History Week and at the same time the local district hall’s 50th birthday. Avon was once a vibrant little farming village and many have a story of either growing up in the community or visiting for some reason.  Although this is a little late, and missed the reunion as they were asking for people who had stories relating to the town and its residents to contact them, I have no doubt that those organising the event would still love to hear from anyone who would like to pass on their stories. Email avon5501@yahoo.com.au or mail RSD Box 1050, Avon SA 5501.

Lobethal – Lobethal Museum
Also as part of the SA History Week 2010 celebrations, the Lobethal Museum recently celebrated it’s 50th Anniversary. This church museum also houses the little “seminary”, erected in 1845, the first three Australian-trained Lutheran pastors graduated in 1855. For inquiries regarding the museum please phone Rose on (08) 8389 6825.

Lobethal – National Costume Museum
‘The Courier’ newspaper recently reported that the privately owned National Costume Museum which has been on diplay in the former Onkaparinga Woollen Mill at Lobethal, now has a new home. Previously reported on Postcards, the owners of this spectacular 4000 piece collection, which contains items of clothing dating from 1812 through to 2000, rejected numerous offers from overseas buyers, as they wished for the collection to stay in South Australia. The collection will be left to the National Trust and it will be housed at the Millicent National Trust Living History Musuem.

Wallaroo – Welsh history
The Yorke Peninsula Country Times reports that as part of the St David’s Day Copper 150 sesquicentenary celebrations held in Wallaroo, local historian and chairperson of the Wallaroo Heritage and Nautical Museum and National Trust, Colin Boase, presented a brief synopsis of the Welsh influence in Wallaroo and the history of the Welsh churches. As the Welsh were experts in the field of smelting, their services were much sought after in the 1860s. A number were brought direct from Wales to settle in Wallaroo. The full article can be read online here.

South Australia’s Historic Buildings in Danger
The Sunday Mail recently had an article making mention that 100s of ‘character’ buildings and old homes across South Australia are at risk of demolition because of a perceived “lack of will” towards protecting the state’s heritage. In a survey it found about half of SA’s 66 councils (mostly rural), do not have heritage lists or registers that protect buildings of local significance. Among the 29 councils without heritage protection are Yankallila, Naracoorte Lucindale, Port Lincoln, Whyalla, Yorke Peninsula and the cradle of the state’s mining past, the Copper Coast. You can read the full article here.

VICTORIA
Brighton – Brighton Historical Society
The Brighton Historical Society was a recipient of the ‘Sir Rupert Hamer Records Management Award for providing greater understanding and access to community archives for cataloguing their entire map and plan collection. Volunteers contributed more than 500 hours to digitise the maps and plans. The originals are now preserved and copies are made available for the public to use. Fantastic work!!

Drysdale – Bellarine Historical Society
Congratulation to the Bellarine Historical Society, on their recent ‘Sir Rupert Hamer Records Management Award’. They were recognised for their work digitising and indexing original school registers. The project began after a committee member retrieved from the rubbish old records from two schools closed in the 1990s. The historical society has also transferred the original registers, indexes and photographs to PROV, and written a brief history of each school. So many records would be lost without groups like this historical society. Thank you for helping to preserve history!!

St Kilda – Jewish Museum of Australia
The Jewish Museum of Australia was established to explore and share the Jewish experience in Australia and benefit Australia’s diverse society.

It was a region long isolated from the rest of Scotland, and until the appearance of the railroad in the 19th century, long retained its strong Celtic and Viking character and its preoccupation with a series of great families who for centuries had defined the course of its history.

The Bazzill Basics Heritage range of papers has such a beautiful classic look to it. Using cream heavy-weight paper, and printed with brown and black on it – this Family Story page allows for just that – you to write either your own memories, or those of other family members.

This is one of the nicest family tree scrapbooking papers I’ve ever seen … and it includes decent sized boxes for the photos, and reasonable space to write your details. This sheet allows for parents, and 4 children. If you have more children, you can always get some of Family Group Chart 2, which has room for another 6 children.

This is page 2 of the Family Group Chart from Bazzill Basics, and is needed if you have more that four children in a family. This is printed in the same format as Chart 1, heavy-weight card, brown and black printing on cream card, large photo boxes, and reasonable space to write.

If you’re creating a family tree heritage scrapbooking album, you will need a pedigree chart, and this is an ideal one for you. One the pages in the Bazzill Basics Heritage collection – this four generation chart allows you to fill in from yourself, back to your great grandparents.

So you’re creating a heritage album, and have some pages with photographs – these journalling boxes are a lovely (and easy) addition to your page. Journalling doesn’t mean writing a whole story, just a few lines about the photo, or people in the photo.

A heritage album is not complete without some photos, and with photos comes journalling. This page from the Bazzill Basics Heritage collection comes as a 12″x12″ sheet which contains six journalling boxes each vertical, (there is another page which has them horizontal). Each measures 14.5cm x 10cm (5 1/2″ x 3 1/2″), and they are printed on heavy-weight cream coloured card and co-ordinate with other papers in the Bazzill Basics Heritage range.

The Red and White Book of Menzies: The History of Clan Menzies and Its Chiefs – DATA CD – $34.50
The 19th century sought to provide a complete chronological account of the descent of great Scottish families from earliest times onward. This monumental work is best consulted for the period after the time of Lord Robert, Lord High Chamberlain of Scotland, ca. 1177-1266. It continues in increasing detail through the 62nd Chief, Captain Neil James Menzies, providing for each chief valuable information, both genealogical and historical. Additional material is provided on the tartans, rules for weaving the various Menzies setts, the various arms and armorial bearings of branches of the family, mottoes, war cries, badges, banners, pipers, bards, piobaireachds, and much other information nowhere else available. According to the clan society itself, though, considerable caution should be used when dealing with the earlier materials.

The Irvines of Drum and Collateral Branches – DATA CD – $34.50
“This work is intended to give not only a genealogical list of ‘The Barounes of Drum’ and their descendants, but to sketch, through them, the social and political position of those barons in Scotland who although not Peers, were yet classed as part of the nobility of the land.” So begins Lieutenant-Colonel Jonathan Forbes Leslie in his estimable history of the Irvines of Drum. He begins with a discussion of the region of Drum itself, and then moves on to the name and arms of Irvine. His extensive genealogical account of the family then begins with Alexander Irvine, who was granted a charter by King Robert Bruce (but about whom little else is known), and continues from William de Irwin of Drum (ca. 1332) in strict chronological fashion down to Alexander Forbes Irvine, the proprietor of Drum at the time the book was originally published. There is as well much supplemental material, including Ane Account of the Family of Drum from 1404, a list of charters and deeds in the archives at Drum, collateral branches of the Irvines, parish ministers bearing the surname of Irvine, and more.

Inverurie was the name of both a town and a parish in Garioch district, Aberdeenshire, with the town situated at the confluence of the rivers Ury and Don. It therefore is part of the history of the northeast of Scotland.

This 1938 directory contains over 60 directory maps and includes a key map of the greater Brisbane area, and includes Wynnum, Manly, Lotla and Sandgate.
Invading Australia: Japan and the Battle for Australia 1942 – P. Stanley – $35.00
Each year, more and more Australians celebrate Anzac Day and honour the lives of those who fought for their country. There is even a push to create a new public holiday, in remembrance and celebration of the ‘Battle for Australia’. But was there ever really such a battle, and how close did Australia actually come to being invaded?

‘Invading Australia’ provides a comprehensive, thorough and well-argued examination of these and other pertinent questions. Peter Stanley writes compellingly about Australian attitudes to Japan before, during and after World War II, and uses archival sources to discuss Japan’s war plans early in 1942. He also shows that rather than a ‘Battle for Australia’ there was a worldwide fight for freedom and democracy that has allowed the West to enjoy great prosperity in the decades since 1945.

Historical Encyclopedia of Western Australia – J. Gregory & J. Gothard – $89.95
