But it is coming, bit-by-bit.

This is a listing of new ‘Australian’ data added on to these online data websites recently.

ANCESTRY.COM.AU
Ancestry.com.au continue to add to their collection, by adding the following:
New South Wales, Australia, Applications and Admissions to Orphan Schools, 1817-1833

 ANCESTRY WORLD ARCHIVE PROJECT
The World Archive Project, is a division of Ancestry.com which “lets you help us bring free historical record collections to the public. Contributors become the first to see new collections as they type in information that creates searchable record indexes.” Keep an eye on this site, or better yet, register as an indexer, as there are LOTS of Australian records being worked on here. And the sooner they’re indexed, the sooner everyone has access.

 AUSTRALIAN NEWSPAPERS (NLA and TROVE)
The availability of the Australian newspapers continues at an amazing speed (though no doubt, just the one we want isn’t yet online!!), but still to even have these coming is a phenomenal resource for all. These newspapers appear both on the NLA Australian Newspapers website, as well as on TROVE.
The contributors reveal how, since its initial subdivision in the early 1850s, Carlton has been home to Melbourne’s most diverse ethnic and social heritage: from the early bourgeoisie, who built the grand terrace houses of south Carlton, to successive waves of immigrants who have enlivened the community. They capture the excitement of the nationally important social movements that sprang to life in Carlton–from the eight-hour day campaign of the 1850s to the experimental theatre of the1960s and 1970s–and show how the Carlton Association’s fight with the Housing Commission in the 1960s did much to determine the character of Melbourne’s inner suburbs in to the twenty-first century. Throughout, the major institutions and architecturally significant buildings that characterise the suburb, are illuminated.

Battles often are cited as turning points in the history of a region, and thus the Battle of Stamford Bridge, the Battle of Hastings and the Battle of Largs become fixed points in the mind of students of Britain. In 1263, the great Scandinavian king Hakon collected an enormous fleet of ships, with troops to match, and sailed for Scotland, only to be defeated by a combination of weather and the Scots army. While all agree that this was not the battle to end Norse authority in Scotland, it was a battle which captured the popular imagination in the 18th and 19th centuries.

When this book first appeared, it broke entirely new ground. Here, for the first time, was an orderly, logical, method of studying and identifying Scotland’s most famous symbol — the tartan. James Scarlett, the greatest tartan authority of the late 20th century, has given us a concise guide to the history of tartan. He describes in detail over 180 different tartans, and explains the principles of the designs and simplifies their identification. Whether you are a beginner or have been studying tartans for years, this is an invaluable work, one you will consult again and again.

Edited by Adam Gunn and John Mackay, this is a history of the county of Sutherland, with introductory chapters which trace the history of the region down to 1800, and with a subsequent chapter on the home life and customs of the region.

The town of Kilmarnock is the primary focus of this work, with attention to the local castles of Dean, home of the Boyds, Crawfurdland, and Rowallen. The religious nature of this southwestern town likewise required that much attention be given to the Covenanters, dissenters, churches in the town, and its religious evolution. The poetry of Robert Burns is so associated with the name Kilmarnock that the poet and his work repeatedly come to the fore. Other poets and writers of songs, as well as performers, likewise required attention, as did natural disasters, lists of magistrates and town officials, and other information extracted from local records. But overall, the history of the dominant family in the town and region appears and reappears.

This study of the religious transformation of Scotland begins with a study of the Roman background, and continues with an exploration of the mission of St. Ninian to the Britons and the Picts; the maintenance of that church after its founder?s death; the role of Iona, Bangor, Kingarth, and Glasgow in the Christianizing of Scotland; and the establishment and development of the church in the Northern Isles. There is a chapter on the Celtic cross, its origins at Candida Casa, and its dispersal throughout Scotland, Ireland, and northern England; and lastly, Simpson considers St. Boniface and the beginning of the Roman church?s influence within Scotland.

The Floating Brothel: The Extraordinary Story of Female Convicts Bound for Botany Bay – S. Rees – $24.95 NEW EDITION
“The Floating Brothel” is the antidote for bodice-ripping history, exposing the story of 237 female convicts – mainly taken from London’s fever-ridden, overcrowded Newgate Gaol – to the fledgling colony of New South Wales. Though it was percieved that the ship was rife with prostitution and debauchery, the reality was more complex and more interesting, differing dramatically from the well-known stories of hellish journeys to Australia.

In 1901 the Australian colonies came together to form a new nation which, for the next twenty-six years, was governed from Melbourne. It was a small city, a place where people knew each other – not just the people who mattered, but those who didn’t yet – where small changes loomed large and the import of big changes could scarcely be imagined. Yet in the extraordinary first quarter of the twentieth century, as the world lurched headlong into a new era, this overgrown town, in all but name the nation’s capital, oversaw the birth of modern Australia.

The convicts transported on the ‘Eleanor’ in February 1831 were not hardened criminals. The men on board – impoverished agricultural labourers and rural craftsmen from the counties of Berkshire, Hampshire, Wiltshire and Dorset – were transported because they were ‘Swing rioters’ – men who dared to demand a modest wage-increase and the preservation of winter work threatened by the threshing machine.

The Hume family is one of the oldest and most illustrious in Scotland, and the family long has been associated with the national history of that country. This is a study of Humes of Polwarth, a parish in Berwickshire, midway between Duns and Greenlaw.

Macbeth: King, Queen, and Clan – DATA CD – $34.50
Perhaps with the exception of Robert the Bruce, no Scottish king is so famous as Macbeth ? and yet, what do we really know about him? If our only reference is Shakespeare’s play, then he was a power-hungry monster, taking life and throne from the rightful king. His queen was even worse. But, as John Macbeth here shows, he was of an ancient Celtic family, the hereditary ruler of Moray, and a popular leader with a strong personal following. This is an excellent introduction to the murky history of Macbeth, his queen, and his clan down through Scottish history.

Here are presented the genealogical and historical records of all branches of the Sutherland family holding titles of nobility that is included in Sir James Balfour-Paul’s monumental work “The Scots Peerage”.

Pollock Genealogy: A Biographical Sketch of Oliver Esq., of Carlisle, Pennsylvania 1776-1784 – DATA CD – $34.50
Originally published 1883. 63 pages, this facsimile of the book is a thorough genealogical study of the various Pollock families settling in Pennsylvania in the colonial period. As well as the descendants of Oliver, there is extensive material on the descendants of John, James, and Charles Pollock, brother who emigrated from Coleraine, Ireland about 1750, and the descendants of Samuel Pollock of Chester and Dauphin Counties.

The author shows how the convicts were changed by the natural worlds they encountered. Escaping authority, they soon settled away from the towns, dressing in kangaroo-skin and living off the land. Behind the official attempt to create a Little England was another story of adaptation, in which the poor, the exiled and the criminal made a new home in a strange land. This is their story, the story of Van Diemen’s Land.

Alistair and Henrietta Tayler worked as a team to record the history and activities of the Jacobites in Scotland during the 18th century, and their work, noted in the first half of the 20th century and later for its quality, has remained an invaluable source of historical information on some of the most important figures in Scottish history.

The Heriots of Ramornie were an ancient Fifeshire family of modest beginnings who over the course of many centuries slowly increased their lands and their position. They were seldom on the national scene and they held no national office in church or state. They were ardent reformers during the Reformation, adhering to the religion of John Knox but careful never to become too exposed to danger from those higher up. They carefully avoided passionate commitment either to the royalist or the parliamentary cause during the 17th century. Younger sons went into business, while the eldest son managed the estate. They lived a simple, pious, cautious life. There were more senior branches of the family in Berwickshire, and other branches were scattered here and there. This work, then, records the life and times of one branch of the Heriots from around 1476 to the end of the 19th century. Included is information on each generation of the family and its history and genealogy, as well as material on seals and arms.

The subtitle here provides valuable information on the purpose and scope of this publication. It is “A Genealogical and Biographical Record of the McClung Family from the Time of their Emigration to the Year 1904.” More to the point, it proclaims itself as a history of a Scots-Irish family, Protestant and indeed Presbyterian in religion, who moved from Galloway around 1690 to settle in Ulster in northern Ireland.

Genealogical Collections Concerning the Scottish House of Edgar – DATA CD – $34.50
This interesting and unusual history is concerned with the southeast of Scotland and with several families who interacted with the Edgar family or who were involved in events associated with that family.

A Claverhouse Sourcebook: A Collection of Materials Relating to John Graham of Claverhouse Viscount of Dundee – DATA CD – $34.50
John Graham of Claverhouse first and foremost claimed to be a military commander, a loyal soldier who accepted and carried out orders without overall concern for religious or political ideology. He served for decades on the continent, where he trained as a soldier of fortune, and he was respected both by King Charles II and his brother King James VII, and by Prince William of Orange. He was employed to maintain order in portions of Scotland committed to Covenanter or Presbyterian religious beliefs, and he was charged, often without proof, of atrocities against those Covenanters in the period after 1660 and the Restoration of King Charles II.

Based on personal accounts and the recollections of six Japanese soldiers, captured diaries and the unit diaries of the Australian forces, this powerful re-examination of Kokoda brings a new perspective to one of the most brutal conflicts in Australian war history.

Foulis Castle and the Monroes of Lower Iveagh – DATA CD – $34.50
Alexander Mackenzie’s massive study of the Monroes was published as The History of the Munros of Foulis, and has from its publication to the 21st century been one of the most respected and consulted accounts of this venerable Scottish family. This publication continues and expands that earlier work by detailing the genealogy and history of the Irish branch of the Monro family. Major Daniel Munro of the House of Obsdale, accompanied by his brother Robert and his nephew George, went to Ireland in 1642 in the army commanded by General Robert Munro. For the next ten years or so, he fought in Ireland, and in 1666 was rewarded by King Charles II with the lands of Lower Iveagh. It therefore was through this third son of George Munro of Obsdale that we have the link between the Scottish and the Irish branches of the Munro family. This history contains extensive materials on the history of the Munroes in Ireland and in North America, from their arrival in Ireland in 1642 through the end of the 19th century.

The Patten Families: Genealogies of the Pattens from the North of Ireland – DATA CD – $34.50
This is a historical and genealogical account of a family primarily from its “Scots-Irish” origins into North America, with a secondary interest in various Patten lines which have an English descent.

The Jacobite Peerage: Baronetage, Knightage and Grants of Honour – DATA CD – $34.50
Originally published in 1904, de Ruvigny’s important work is the only source for the genealogical information — as well as the details of the creations themselves — pertaining to the titles of nobility granted by the exiled Stewart kings after the Revolution of 1688 and extending to 1784. There is a wealth of information here, with descendants in many cases as recent as the early 20th century. While there are English, Scottish, and Irish titles of nobility granted and here studied, the book is of particular interest to the Scottish families of Cameron, Dillon, Drummond, Erskine, Fforester, Fraser, Graeme, Grant, Hay, Lumisden, MacDonald, MacDonell, MacGregor, Mackenzie, Mackintosh, Maclean, MacLeod, Murray, Oliphant, Ramsay, Robertson, Sempill, and Stewart.

The Loyal Clans – DATA CD – $34.50
This history of the Highland families or clans who remained loyal to the Hanoverian government during the Jacobite rebellions is one of the most insightful and impressive studies ever done on the period in the late 17th and 18th centuries, when families — father and son, brother and brother — decided which way to turn in the struggle between the exiled Stuarts and the government established after 1688. It is a reflective, analytical, and incredibly well researched study of what happens between and within families torn by complex issues of self-interest, loyalty to constituted authority, religious obedience, and anger between competing local families. This study begins with a consideration of the type of politics which existed in the Highlands and then looks at the Lords of the Isles, the Stewart monarchy, royal lieutenants, the Clan Gregor, and the divine right of kings, as well as the new order emerging by the early 19th century. While the book is essential to anyone studying the Jacobite period, it has extensive materials on the following families: Cameron, Campbell, Forbes, Fraser, Gordon, Graham, Grant, Hamilton, MacDonald, MacGregor, MacIan, Mackay, Mackenzie, Mackintosh, MacLean, MacLeod, MacPherson, Menzies, Munro, Murray, Robertson, Ross, Stewart, and Sutherland.

The early history of this Scottish family is uncertain, but by 1246 there is concrete evidence of the family established as proprietors of Strathtay and styled Thanes of Lochtay. The destruction and disappearance of early manuscripts and documents for this family leaves many gaps, and it is only as the history unfolds into the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries that the documentation significantly increases. The first Macnachtans settled in Ireland in the 16th century, and this history records their story as well as that of the family in Scotland. Many of the clan as well were long involved in India, and the 19th and 20th centuries saw members of the family seeking career and fortune there. There also is collateral genealogical material on the Dunkin, Stafford, Echlin, and Blackers families.
