While the first code of regulations for the Royal Irish Constabulary had been published in 1837, the year after the service had been reorganised, it was not until 1866 the a complete manual was issued, entitled The Royal Irish Constabulary Manual; or Guide to the Discharge of Police Duties. The preface to this was written by J. Stewart Wood, Inspector General of the Constabulary Force in Ireland and in this Wood noted that while it was impossible to anticipate every event and and difficulty a policeman might encounter while attempting to discharge his duty, the Constabulary Manual would afford many of the answers to many of the questions and be suggestive of others.

Many of the best known symbols of crown and country date from medieval times and collectively constitute the visible signs of a state. This work examines the national arms — the royal shields and arms — of England, Scotland and Ireland as they developed and changed from 1066 down through the reign of Queen Victoria. Included as well are the badges, motto and crest of the monarchy, including the crest of Scotland. There is as well a chapter on the crown and its symbolism, the crowns worn by the various levels of nobility, the supporters placed on either side of the shield (unicorns for Scotland), the floral badges (the thistle for Scotland) and, most confusing for Americans, the flag. Wonderful color illustrations throughout.

This journal will help you write your unique story – for your family and friends, and for those not yet born. In times gone by, when many people were unable to read or write, families passed down stories about their ancestors – from one generation to the next – by word of mouth. Sadly, this tradition has largely been lost. For example, how much do you know about your great grandparents? Similarly, your own memories of your life and those of your parents may be vivid in your mind, but they too will be lost to your children and grandchildren – and their children – unless you write them down.

With my own Phillips family roots in Moonta, I first came to know Jim in the 1970s. But probably few knew him as well as Ros Paterson.

The following was written by Roslyn Paterson OAM:

Jim Harbison OAM was a wonderful mentor to many students, researchers, authors and historians. He had an enquiring mind and read extensively. His own research on the mines at Moonta was all encompassing and enabled many conservation projects to proceed with federal and state funding. For many years he was the president of the National Trust, Moonta Branch and took the branch from an upstairs room in the Moonta Town Hall to the large former Moonta Mines School. From his dry cleaning shop in the main street of Moonta he would draw up the volunteer rosters and sort out the change bags for the Moonta Mines Museum and the Moonta Miners Cottage. Using his extensive knowledge he was responsible for the granting of properties and mine sites in the Moonta Mines area to the National Trust. He was also the major local player in the Moonta Mines State Heritage Precinct. The iconic engine houses in this area were saved and restored as a result of Jim’s perseverance. It was because of these two massive projects and his unfailing support for the heritage of Moonta that I recommended him for bard ship.

Jim was the son of one of Moonta’s doctors, and like many of this profession, he had the most hard to read handwriting! He was educated at Prince Alfred College in Adelaide and after a year or so at Adelaide University studying medicine, he returned home to Moonta and became the town’s dry cleaner. However, his shop was primarily the place for tourist information, the National Trust informal meeting centre and the place to learn about Moonta’s history. Jim and Betty were married in their mature years and had no children. They were a loving couple who supported each other in their myriad of activities. In many ways Jim was an old fashioned gentleman. Did not use a mobile phone, computer, electric typewriter or an answering service. If you wanted to talk to him it was best to ring him at 7 a.m. before he went out into his garden or out to his beloved museum.

On a personal note it was Jim who encouraged me to transfer my membership from Kadina to Moonta because of the greater involvement in Cornish mining at the latter branch in the early 1970’s. And when I needed a job because of the downturn in farming, it was Jim who recommended me for the registrar’s position at the Moonta Mines Museum. Because of his research skills I was able to unlock the riddle of my Phillips family tree after years of searching for a headstone in the Moonta Cemetery. I valued his friendship, counsell and yes, we will all miss him.

Jim died on Tuesday 15th June at the Moonta Hospital, and his funeral [took place] at the Moonta Mines Uniting Church.

The 19th century sought to provide a complete chronological account of the descent of great Scottish families from earliest times onward. This monumental work is best consulted for the period after the time of Lord Robert, Lord High Chamberlain of Scotland, ca. 1177-1266. It continues in increasing detail through the 62nd Chief, Captain Neil James Menzies, providing for each chief valuable information, both genealogical and historical. Additional material is provided on the tartans, rules for weaving the various Menzies setts, the various arms and armorial bearings of branches of the family, mottoes, war cries, badges, banners, pipers, bards, piobaireachds, and much other information nowhere else available. According to the clan society itself, though, considerable caution should be used when dealing with the earlier materials.

“This work is intended to give not only a genealogical list of ‘The Barounes of Drum’ and their descendants, but to sketch, through them, the social and political position of those barons in Scotland who although not Peers, were yet classed as part of the nobility of the land.” So begins Lieutenant-Colonel Jonathan Forbes Leslie in his estimable history of the Irvines of Drum. He begins with a discussion of the region of Drum itself, and then moves on to the name and arms of Irvine. His extensive genealogical account of the family then begins with Alexander Irvine, who was granted a charter by King Robert Bruce (but about whom little else is known), and continues from William de Irwin of Drum (ca. 1332) in strict chronological fashion down to Alexander Forbes Irvine, the proprietor of Drum at the time the book was originally published. There is as well much supplemental material, including Ane Account of the Family of Drum from 1404, a list of charters and deeds in the archives at Drum, collateral branches of the Irvines, parish ministers bearing the surname of Irvine, and more.

Family history, since the advent of the Cook Bi-centennial in Australia, has changed from the interest of a select few to become one of the most popular pastimes of Australians. Yet in spite of the dramatic increase in membership of and numbers family history societies, the changes in library and archive practices and collections to meet the demands of those wanting to research their family history, and the vast numbers of subscribers to commercial family history websites, little is known about the interests, research practices and make up of Australian genealogists.

A survey of Australian genealogists has been launched to examine these questions as part of a master’s research program at the University of New England – School of Humanities.

Entitled ‘Who Are the Genealogists of Australia’ the survey asks genealogists about their motivations for beginning their research and why they continue to conduct their research. They are also asked about their research interests and how and where they conduct their research and why they make those choices. The survey also investigates their plans for the product of their research. Finally, genealogists are asked about their demographic characteristics.

In undertaking this survey, one substantial problem exists. That is, there is no census of Australian genealogists that enables a representative statistical sample to be easily taken. Genealogists practice their craft in many different ways and locations. Surveying them in any one place will not achieve the broad representation needed. Therefore, for a comprehensive result to be achieved it is important that as wide a range of participants as possible be obtained.

Your help in undertaking the survey will positively assist in developing the comprehensive picture aimed for in this research project.

The survey is open for participation until 30 November 2009, and can be found here
