Important Announcement from Inside History Magazine

For those who were wondering where the latest edition of Inside History Magazine is, the following announcement from Cassie Mercer, Founder of the magazine, explains it all …

“It is with great sadness that I’m writing to let you know that I’ve decided the next issue of Inside History magazine will be our last. It’s been a difficult decision, one that I’ve made only after careful consideration.

It was a passion of mine to start a magazine that focused on Australian history, to offer a platform to people like yourselves who research and discover inspiring stories about our heritage, and share it with an audience who are just as passionate about our history.

As a sole trader for the past seven years it’s been difficult to break even, and for all the hard work I’ve poured into the magazine, I’ve never taken a salary. Rather, I’ve poured my own money into the business to keep it going and to make up for the losses I sustained each year, in the hope of course that the next financial year I would break even. At times we came tantalisingly close to doing so. But while we have built up a loyal following, I have always had to prop up the business. I cannot continue to do this; to keep running into debt just because I want to keep publishing the magazine.

So I have decided that, unless a patron or sponsor steps forward to make up the shortfall, I will have to close the title. It’s not been an easy decision, but the stress and cost of publishing the magazine over the past seven years has been enormous.

I would like to thank our subscribers and advertisers who believed in Inside History from the start; without your support the magazine would not have lasted as long as it did. I would like to thank our talented contributors, who generously gave their time and expertise to write for us. And to our readership, all 60,000 of you across our print, digital and social platforms, thank you for reading the magazine, and for telling us how much you loved each issue. We’ve loved hearing your stories, how we’ve helped you overcome research brick walls, and connected you with new family members.

And lastly, thank you to my loyal editorial team, Sarah, Krissy, Penny, Andrea and Alison, who have worked with me for many years. Their expertise, passion and drive shone through each issue.

But I will finish this on a positive note. I plan to keep Inside History’s website going, and update it regularly with new research, stories, reviews and history and genealogy news. And we’re also working on our exciting photo-dating website, due to launch later this year. We’ll keep you updated on its progress. Both will be free resources available to everyone.

Because it’s our last issue, we’re spending more time than usual making it perfect. So it will be in letterboxes and online a little late – the on-sale date will now be 27 April. Our apologies for any inconvenience.

If you’d like to ensure you have a copy of the final issue, you can pre-order online at www.insidehistory.com.au/shop.

And we’ll be in touch with current subscribers shortly to talk through the next steps.

I’ve been fortunate to make many new friends throughout my time editing Inside History, and I’m grateful to all of you for letting the magazine be part of your lives. The team and I are looking forward to continuing to be part of the history community online through the website and our social media channels. If you haven’t already, do follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest and keep reading our e-newsletter to stay in touch and for regular online features and news.

This is very sad news for Australia’s history and genealogy community. It was the best history and genealogy magazine by far in terms of content and design, and certainly leaves a gap in the market.

Be sure to get you pre-order in for the final issue (if you’re not a subscriber), and maybe it’s time to stock up on some back issues too – while they last.

But we would like thank Cassie and the whole team who made Inside History Magazine happen. A BIG THANKYOU for bringing so much fascinating historical content to us, in every one of the 37 issues. We truly wish the very best for each and every one of you in the future.

Dear Cassie and all at Inside History magazine – as with all the other comments on Facebook I am sad you’ve had to make this decision and do understand your reason – it seems all print magazines and newspapers will soon be like the dinosaurs and we will have to do everything online. As a senior woman I can access my newspaper online however I do prefer the feel of a newspaper, magazine or hardcover book, it’s something I grew up with and these days I mourn the loss of my past. Anyway, you will be fine and no doubt continue being involved with your passion so I wish you the best of luck in whatever you do in the future, it’s been fun knowing you and reading your wonderful publication. Kindest regards, Carol

  2. I was unaware that the magazine existed so I guess I will never know what I have missed

  3. Terry house says:

Please refund my money due to cancellation of magazine.

  4. Hi Terry, the message from Inside History Magazine said “and we’ll be in touch with current subscribers shortly to talk through the next steps.” So I suggest waiting for that, see what that says, and follow up with them afterwards if needed.

  5. So sorry to read this news. I have every edition, and enjoyed them all. All the best Anne
