As genealogists and family historians, it goes without saying that we LOVE cemeteries and headstones, so take a moment to read this, and sign the petition in a bid to stop the Western Australian government not only destroying headstones, but also family history and memories along with them.
This issue has been brought to my attention by Sandra, and she’s asking everyone possible to help bring an end to the clearing of headstones in Western Australian Cemeteries.
As background information the Metropolitan Cemeteries Board has been clearing headstones for almost 30 years from Karrakatta Cemetery in Western Australia and will commence this practice in the Fremantle Cemetery this year.
She says … “previously headstones have been removed from many graves of our soldiers that fought and suffered badly during the wars so that we may have our freedom. Now they have no markers on their graves … is this the way we thank them? Headstones from founding pioneers, people who have contributed historically to this state have had headstones removed … is this how we thank them?”
“Valuable historic information and artefacts have been sent off and crushed for road base and we honour these people by driving over it.”
The Metropolitan Cemeteries Board has other options available without removing headstones from graves but they refuse to consider these options.

Oh dear!!! Our very, very valuable history… For ALL of us, it must be preserved.
This is just disgusting for many reasons. As the ones mentioned in this article there is also the fact that families of the deceased paid a lot of money to have their loved ones placed to rest plus have headstones erected. If the powers that be are so LOW as to crush these beautiful headstones and put into the roads I hope they are taking the time to trace family members and pay them some money back this is AWFUL and disgusting. What (dare I ask) are they doing with the remains of these poor people who sadly died in this Governments area. It just shows that we do NOT rest in pace for eternity
Would this be some form of vandalism ?, l don’t have anyone buried in W.A., but l think it is highly disreprectful to the familes who are buried in these graves. What about the money that must have saved hard to have great headstones. Why are people so heartless when it comes to cemeteries, just because they are dead, doesn’t mean we can do what we want with headstones/cemeteries. I bet if it was a councillor’s family member buried in there, it would not be happening. I HOPE THE POWERS TO BE, WAKE UP TO THEMSELVES BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.
