Australia

Australian Bailliere’s Gazetteers Set – DATA CD – $69.50
The word ‘gazetteer’ means ‘a geographic dictionary or index’, which is very appropriate for all ‘Bailliere’s’ titles, as they are primarily an alphabetical listing of all places (large and small), together with geographical information and physical features. Compiled over a period of 13 years by Robert P. Whitworth, and published by F.F. Bailliere in Melbourne, this series of Australian Gazetteers is ideal for researchers of Australian history, when trying to locate either small towns or regions, or ones that may have changed name.

Geographical Dictionary or Gazetteer of the Australian Colonies 1848 – DATA CD – $29.50
Part dictionary and part gazetteer, this is a magnificent reference work for locating places and geographical features around Australia in the 1840s.

New South Wales

Bailliere’s New South Wales Gazetteer and Road Guide 1870 – DATA CD – $29.50
This is the 2nd edition of this important 19th century gazetteer. It contains ‘the most recent and accurate information on every place in the colony’ – in 1870. It contains a wealth of information for historians and genealogists, and will interest the general reader as well. There are entries for towns and villages, lakes, rivers and creeks, islands, bays, hills and mountains, counties, hundreds, local government areas, electoral districts, stations, runs and other localities and features. It often gives latitude and longitude, populations, proximity to other towns, local industries, services such as coach and mail runs, hotels, churches, schools and much more. Pastoral tenants are also included, as are some of the principal landowners.

Sydney Street Directory 1924 (Wilson) – DATA CD – $29.50
Wilson’s Sydney and Suburbs Street Directory for 1924 contains over 100 maps of the city, suburbs and Blue Mountains – which also shows Sydney Harbour, the Municipalities and Shires, the railways, tramways and main roads.

Sydney Street Directory c1943 (Gregory) – DATA CD – $23.50
This volume is a facsimile of the 11th edition, published around 1943. If you’re wanting to know what the city and suburbs of Sydney was like in 1943, this is a brilliant way to find out. Showing 96 clearly marked maps, you’ll find over 15,000 streets named, as well as tram and train lines, municipal boundaries, parks and reserves and other distinctive features. There are indexes to wharves and lessees, yacht clubs, bays and reserves, real estate agents, hospitals and of course the streets.

 

Sydney Street Directory c1944 (Robinson) – DATA CD – $27.50
This edition of ‘Robinson’s Sydney Street Directory’ contains over 170 street maps of the City of Sydney and the surrounding suburbs.

 

Then and Now: Historic Roads Round Sydney – DATA CD – $23.50

Queensland

Bailliere’s Queensland Gazetteer and Road Guide 1876 – DATA CD – $27.50
After the main Gazetteer there is a 66 page listing of approximately 3000 runs, with the pastoral districts in which they are situated, the names of their lessees, and the next post towns. A fuller description is given of those runs in the settled districts.

Queensland Railway and Tourist Guide – DATA CD – $23.50
Written at the request of the Queensland Railway Commissioners in 1890, this book contains a history of the colony of Queensland together with a description of ‘all the country within Queensland traversed by the railway lines, with interesting extra information for tourists, travellers and all other classes’.

The Roads of Queensland 1913 – DATA CD – $23.50
The Roads of Queensland’ was published in 1913 as a guide for travellers, tourists, motorists, drovers and land seekers to this state. The introduction in this book says that it is the the only work of its kind in being so comprehensive. The compilers devoted five years to the production of it, in order to make the details as accurate as possible and up to date at the time of publications. It contains a large amount of fascinating information giving insight into the period. You will information on the pastoral, agricultural, dairying, mining and sawmilling industries, as well as the various products of each district, the populations of all localities, the nature of the road-beds, whether the river and creek crossings are good or bad, where water can be found, the accommodation and other services in each town. Even where the telegraphic and telephonic stations were, and the coach routes, tourist trips, and various stock stations.

Greater Brisbane Area Atlas and Directory of Residents and Streets 1931 – DATA CD – $27.50
The “Greater Brisbane Area Atlas and Directory of Residents and Streets” was first published in 1931 in order to provide up-to-date maps and residential information of Brisbane and its suburbs. This directory contains almost 50 street maps and includes a key map of the greater Brisbane area. Following each street map is a list of the streets and residents for that particular area.

Greater Brisbane Area Atlas and Directory of Residents and Streets c1938 – DATA CD – $27.50
This 1938 directory contains over 60 directory maps and includes a key map of the greater Brisbane area, and includes Wynnum, Manly, Lotla and Sandgate. Following each directory map is a list of the streets and street-by-street listing of residents for that particular area.

The ‘Greater Brisbane Area Atlas and Street Directory’ contains almost 100 detailed street maps of Brisbane and its suburbs. Those covered include; Ipswich, Tingalpa, Cleveland, Redcliffe, Scarborough, Southport and Moreton Bay.

South Australia

Adelaide and Suburban Street Directory 1922 – DATA CD – $14.50
Published in 1922 this was the first edition of the Adelaide and Suburban Street Directory and covers the suburbs of Adelaide in the municipalities of Adelaide, Unley, Port Adelaide, Brighton, Glenelg, Henley and Grange, Hindmarsh, Norwood and Kensington, St Peters and Thebarton.

Adelaide and Suburbs Street Directory 1949 (Gregory) – DATA CD – $19.50
Published in 1949 this edition of the Adelaide and Suburbs Street Directory covers the suburbs of Adelaide as far north as Outer Harbour, as far south as Marino Rocks, and inland as far as Blackwood, Morialta Falls and Hope Valley.

Bailliere’s South Australian Gazetteer and Road Guide 1866 – DATA CD – $27.50

South Australian Counties Atlas 1876 – DATA CD – $29.50
Compiled by H.S. Carroll in 1876, this atlas was the first of its kind ever produced in the Colony, and was thoroughly authentic at the date of publication. It shows all boroughs, postal towns, villages, hamlets, road boards, roads, railways, rivers, lakes, creeks, mountains, stations and the area of county and station (including the names, occupiers, grazing capabilities and area of each). It also includes the population of each town in the colony, height of mountains, length, rise, and fall of rivers, the quantity of cereals and green crops, hay, wine, &c., produced in the different localities, and all the geographical, geological, and physiological matter of South Australia and the Northern Territory at the time.

Tourists’ Road Guide: South Australia Compendium 1 – DATA CD – $29.50
The Tourists’ Road Guides for South Australia were published over a period of at least 20-30 years in the early 1900’s. They include a large amount of fascinating information giving insight into the period as well as information on places and people.

Tasmania

Melbourne Street Directory 1920 (Morgan) – DATA CD – $27.50
Even 90 years ago, this street directory is not unlike ours of today. In just over 300 pages, this one includes not only maps of Melbourne and suburbs, but also numerous advertisement of local businesses of the time, as well as listings of hospitals, associations and societies, asylums and homes, cemeteries, the Government of Victoria and more.

Melbourne Street Directory (Robinson) 1st Edition c.1942 – DATA CD – $19.50
This particular directory is the first edition of Robinson’s Street Directory of Melbourne and Suburbs. It was published to fulfill a long felt need for a clear and up to date directory of Melbourne. It is not unlike the street directories of today, with over 150 pages of information. It includes an alphabetically ordered index to streets and a detailed key map of Melbourne and detailed street maps of the suburbs. A wonderful record of Melbourne and suburbs in the early years of World War II. Melbourne as it was in our parents or grandparents day.
