Australia

Although Google is now very much a part of how we do genealogy and family history in the 21st century not everything is on the Internet. The ‘Family and Local History Resource Directory for Victoria’ highlights major research repositories including archives, libraries, museums, other government departments, specialists organisations as well as smaller local societies which may not have an Internet presence.

Scots in Geelong and District to 1860 – P. Jennings & S. Zada – $25.00
Although this title is not a “list of all Scottish residents to 1860″ it does provide a very extensive list of Scots who were in the area during that period. Those identified in the “People: A-Z” section were carefully selected based on very specific criteria and give a good cross-section of the Scottish community in the first 25 years of settlement of this region.

Life and Progress in Australasia – DATA CD – $27.50
The book is written in nine parts covering Western Australia, South Australia, labour settlements on the Murray River, Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, and New Zealand with the final part being on Australasian Prisons.

New South Wales Police Gazette 1928 – DATA CD – $29.50
If you had family living in New South Wales in 1928, have you thought of looking at the Police Gazettes for information? These are a historian’s goldmine of information. Compiled to be distributed amongst the Police Force only, these Gazettes contain information that can not be found anywhere else. Far from just listing those who were in the Police Force, or those that were on the ‘wrong side’ of the law – you will also find entries of missing persons, or they might be a witness to crime, or they may have had something stolen from them, or they may even have found an item, and reported it to the Police.

Queensland Post Office Directory 1914 (Wise) – DATA CD – $34.50
Directories are an invaluable resource for local, family and social historians as well as for researchers in other fields of Australian history. While they do not give you birth, death and marriage details – core records for genealogists and family historians – they can certainly provide you with information on the region where your ancestors lived, as well as information on their occupation and much more.

South Australian Government Gazette 1843 – DATA CD – $27.50
Issued weekly with occasional special issues, the South Australian Government Gazette contains information such as proclamations, land transactions, court notices, notice of acts, public notices, tenders, appointments and resignations, bankrupt and insolvency notices, impoundments, police auctions, unclaimed letters, licences (publican’s, wine and beer, storekeeper’s, occupation, and depasturing), notices of protection, dissolution of partnerships, rewards on offer and more …

Tasmania Post Office Directory 1932 (Wise) – DATA CD – $27.50
Directories are a valuable resource of historian information. You can use them to locate people, their occupation and address. Useful even more in Australia because of the lack of census records that are available.

Victorian Government Gazette 1879 – DATA CD – $47.50
Generally issued weekly, although Supplementary issues were released from time-to-time, this CD contains all issues that were released during 1879.

England

Buckinghamshire Parish Registers: Great Hampden 1557-1812 – DATA CD – $25.00
Edited by Ernest Arthur Ebblewhite, and published in 1888, this title contains transcriptions of the parish records from the Parish of Great Hampden in Buckinghamshire. It contains Baptisms, Marriages and Burials covering the period 1557-1812. Also contains some Monumental Inscriptions from the Church and Churchyard. Plus Indexes of Persons and Places.

Lancashire Parish Registers: Whalley 1538-1601 – DATA CD – $25.00
Whalley is in Lancashire and also Yorkshire. This CD contains the parish registers from this church. The Parish of Whalley included the towns of: Clitheroe, Colne, Burnley, Altham, Downham, Church, Haslingden, the Chapel of Padiham, Whitewell, Holme, Marsden, Newchurch in Rossendale, Newchurch in Pendle and Accrington. Contains Baptisms, Marriages and Burials covering the period 1538-1601 and an Index of Persons.

The Catholic Record Society Miscellanea Volume X – DATA CD – $35.00
Published in 1915, Miscellanea volume X includes:

Published in 1903, this CD contains the parish registers of West Stow 1558-1850 and Wordwell 1580-1850, both Suffolk parishes plus notes on the history of the parishes and various notable local families. Includes transcripts of tombstones in both churches and churchyards, Lay Subsides for West Stow and Wordwell plus four indexes.These include indexes of the West Stow registers and of the Wordwell registers plus a General Index.

Scotland

Glimpses of Peebles – DATA CD – $29.50
Originally published 1895, this is a history of the town of Peebles from 1760 onward, giving an account of the most memorable events and personalities native to that small town over the course of some 135 years. The glimpses are in detail, and often were fresh in the memory of the townsfolk who recounted them to the author.

Republished here on fully-searchable CD-ROM is the 15th edition of Pye Henry Chavasse’s “Advice to a Wife on the Management of here own Health and on the Treatment of some of the Complaints Incidental to Pregnancy, Labour and Suckling”, which was issued in 1909.
