AUSTRALIAN NEWSPAPERS (NLA and TROVE) (free)
The National Library of Australia’s “Australian Newspapers”really deserves a blog post of it’s own, but for ease of use for finding what records are new, I decided to leave it in . As you can see from the extensive list, the people at NLA have been extremely busy scanning and putting the images online for all to see and use for free … and while heaps of papers have already been scanned, there are HEAPS more still to come!!

If you are a website owner or just someone that keeps an eye out for new data, and you know of new Australian data that I’ve not mentioned – big sites or small – (I admit that it is impossible for me to keep an eye on ALL Australian genie sites, though I do try), please do send an email to me (Alona), so I can make mention of it for others to discover and use.

Happy searching … and keep an eye online for more good Australian data to come!!

  1. Thank you for maintaining such a wealth of information for the benefit of genealogists.

    I have found some helpful information among the Qld wills link .

    Marjorie

  2. Unfortunately none of those sites seem to offer records for the time period that my grandfather emigrated from England: some time between 1918 and 1925.

    Any suggestions on where else to look for these records?

  3. Sam you might like to have a look on the Ancesotors On Board website (http://www.ancestorsonboard.com/) for voyages from England from 1890-1960.

  4. Sam you may wish to look at the Australian Electoral Rolls that are on ancestry.com.au. There are rolls there upto 1954 so you are bound to find your grandfather. Unlike UK census records they don’t list family relationships but only the adults (over 21 in some cases not 18).

    Also try the National Library newspaper archives at http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home as I have found many German immigrants listed in the shipping columns.

  5. I am trying to locate Melbourne (Australia) Census records between 1915 and 1935.
    Are they available of your site?

  6. Hi Margaret, unfortunately very few Australian censuses actually exist, so that’s where census substitutes come into it. You can find a listing of the early ones here http://www.jaunay.com/auscensus.html.

    For 1900 onwards, as none exist, I would suggest checking out directories. There are heaps of these available and they are kind of like modern day White Pages and Yellow Pages combined, in that they give you a persons name, occupation, and address. So by using multiple years, you can see if a person moved around or changed occupation. However they do not have family groupings like censuses.

  7. Ancestry.com.au have just released the 1891 NSW Census and also the 1901 NSW Census.

    Information in 1891 NSW Census (taken on 5 April 1891)
    * Name and number of district
    * County
    * Sub-district
    * Locality
    * Name of householder
    * Total number of persons in schedule
    * Number of Chinese or Aboriginal people included

    Information in 1901 NSW Census (taken on 31 March 1901)
    * Surname of head of household
    * Residence
    * District & sub-district
    * County
    * Number of persons in household
    * Gender

  8. Margaret Sweeney says:

    LOOKIN FOR ANY INFORMATION ON MY AUNT ANNIE MULLIN MARRIED NAMES SIMMERSALT AND GUNDRY. LIVED AT 47 IFOLA ST ? ADELAIDE. SHE HAD ONE SON NAMED MERVIN SIMMERSALT WHO WORKED AT THE POST OFFICE IN 1947. ANY INFORMATION WOULD BE VERY MUCH APPRECIATED. THANK YOU

  9. Hi Margaret, You might like to put your query on the South Australian Genealogy Facebook page, as someone there might help you (http://www.facebook.com/groups/146931945380414/), or alternatively you could write a query to the South Australian RootsWeb Mailing List (http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/AUS/AUS-SAGEN.html). All the best with your search.
